A Europa League final between Manchester United and Villarreal ended up in upset for the Red Devils in Gdansk after losing on penalties to the Spanish team. The first time Villereal has won a major European trophy.
The loss after a David De Gea penalty miss saw Bruno Fernandes in tears and the whole squad in absolute disbelief after the underdogs obtained the silverware. The penalty shoot-out ended 11-10 to Villarreal after drawing the game 1-1 after full and extra time.
First blood was drawn for Villarreal after a perfect freekick from freekick specialist Parejo. He lofted the ball calmly, which allowed Gerard Moreno to first-time volley the ball into David De Gea's net.
Cavani did proceed to get a goal back after a deflected half volley from Marcus Rashford at the edge of the box, the ball fell luckily to the feet of Edison Cavani and he proceeded to put the ball into the back of the net.
Throughout this game, Manchester United had a lot of chances to put the game to bed, but sadly the Red Devils didn't have the deadly finishing that was needed. The Villereal defence played the game of a lifetime as well, especially much-rated centre back Pau Torres.
The biggest and most vital part of the game had to be the missed opportunity from Marcus Rashford which seemed easier to score than miss. From this missed opportunity, Rashford received a lot of abuse and more than 70 accounts of racial abuse used against him, which is saddening to see.
Another Manchester United player that received a lot of abuse is David De Gea, who ultimately missed the last penalty which made Manchester United fail to win the Europa League once again. As well as missing the penalty, he didn't get anywhere near the ball on the penalty shootout and, people are now contemplating that this will be the Spanish goalkeepers last game for the club.
What is more worrying is that most people believed that Manchester United would easily win this game and the shock level that came after this result shows how impressive this win is from Villarreal, overturning both Arsenal and Man United.
Alberto Moreno, who's a former Liverpool full-back, had a lot to say about Manchester United after lifting the trophy. On the pitch, he paid his respect to Liverpool, saying "You never walk alone," and then after the match in the changing rooms he said, "Man United, get out!" Manchester United fans were certainly not a fan of this, but Liverpool fans were loving it.
Ole Gunner Solskaer described the loss as "Yeah, of course, it's very disappointing, it's hard, loads of disappointment in the dressing room, but in a penalty shoot out anything can happen and, the penalties were at a high standard cant fault the focus."
Despite Manchester United not lifting the Europa League trophy, the Red Devils will still play Champions League football after finishing second in the Premier League. Villarreal and Unai Emery, who has won his fourth Europa League trophy, can now take in and enjoy this monumental moment for the club.
